Acute Stroke Online
Acute Stroke Online is a web-based, interactive course that provides training on the symptoms, diagnosis and management of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and complications of stroke. Course content is based on information from the AHA's ACLS EP Manual and Resource Text, covering treatment from the field to the emergency department, as well as critical care and rehabilitation. The text has been adapted to an independent study activity to make this resource available to a wider audience of health professionals.


Course Content    

  • Stroke chain of survival
  • 8 D’s of stroke survival
  • Definitions of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
  • Pathophysiology
  • Stroke risk factors, recognition, and management
  • Transition to critical care and rehabilitation

Course Objectives

  • Discuss at least 3 risk factors for stroke.
  • List at least 2 conditions that can be present with neurologic signs or can mimic stroke, including, but not limited to, hypoglycemia and postictal paralysis.
  • Explain the difference in treatment for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
  • Discuss the 3 components of the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale.
  • Identify the time frame in which an ischemic stroke patient can be treated with fibrinolytic therapy


Course Details

  • Length: Online Course 1.5 hours
  • American Heart Association exam; A score of 84% or higher is required to pass
  • Certificate of completion available to print upon successful completion
  • Access to course content for one year following activation of course key
  • No skills session is required to complete the course; however, students will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion, and physicians, nurses, and EMS will be eligible to apply for continuing education credits.

CEUs Included
The American Heart Association is authorized to offer ACCME/AMA Continuing Medical Education Accreditation to Physicians, AAPA Continuing Medical Education Accreditation to Physician Assistants, AANP Credit Acceptance Statement to Nurse Practitioners, ANCC Continuing Education Accreditation to Nurses, CAPCE Continuing Education Accreditation to Emergency Medical Services for the online course. Credits are claimed on the AHA website but there is a time limit of 6 months.

The CPR Lady provides American Heart Association CPR BLS Provider and Instructor certifications and renewals throughout Southern California including Orange County, LA County, San Diego County, and Inland Empire, as well as, San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, Sacramento County and the San Francisco Bay Area. The CPR Lady is authorized to issue AHA cards in California, Arizona and Nevada.
